2012 West End Association Annual Meeting
February 7th, 7:00 pm YMCA, West End
Room
We would like to invite all West End Neighbors to attend the Annual
meeting on February 7th (date moved to the first Tuesday of the month, so it
will not conflict with your Valentine's Day plans). We will be voting for
new Board members at the Feb. 7th meeting. If you, or someone you know,
would be interested in serving the West End neighborhood, please e-mail me
so we can construct a ballot for next month's meeting.
It is
also time to pay your annual West End dues. Our association is only as
strong as its members. Annual membership is only $20 and can be paid
securely online using PayPal, or by mailing a
check to

Wood Window Restoration
- by David Poythress
To push back the tsunami of vinyl and window replacement products that
inundate us in the media, Preserve Historic Forsyth created a Wooden Window
Rehabilitation task force. We salvaged
and restored two double hung wooden windows and developed a presentation
promoting the benefits of restoring your old windows versus replacing them.
The presentation will show a “before” and “after” window that illustrates
the real value in saving original wooden windows. With all the misleading
information about replacement windows in the media today this is a
presentation
you will not want to miss. Mark your calendars and be sure to attend the WEA
monthly meeting September 13th. The meeting is held in the West End room of
the Central YMCA at 7:00 PM. Come in the entrance on the Southeast corner of
the YMCA building that faces West End Blvd., near its intersection with
Glade Street.

The West End
Association Needs You!
President’s Letter |
By Mark Lively
Our beautiful West End neighborhood is preserved for future generations
because of the tireless efforts of its residents. in 1986 my wife and I fell
in love with our West End home, the Nick Mitchell House on the corner of
Brookstown Ave. and West End Blvd. It was opened to the public for the
semiannual West End Homes Tour sponsored by the West End Association.
Thankfully this fine old Craftsman style home had been rescued after
suffering years of neglect that nearly ended in its destruction. it had
fallen into such a state of disrepair that the City of Winston-Salem had
threatened to condemn the structure and send in the bulldozers. My wife and
I decided during the 1986 West End Homes Tour that we would love to own the
home but we had to wait 8 years before the opportunity came to purchase it.
Today we are very happy that the West End neighborhood is thriving. The
majority of the old homes have caring owners. Once again there are many
families with young children. Today it is easy to imagine what the
neighborhood was like in the early 1900s when city dwellers began the move
out to the edge of town, to the “wilderness” as
some considered it, to live in the first suburban Winston neighborhood.
The preservation of Historic West End is a success story made possible by
the contributions of many dedicated residents. The West End Association is a
large part of this story. The Association provides social activities like
the Fourth of July Picnic, the Easter Egg Hunt, and occasional parties that
bring residents together. It follows the deliberations of the Historic
Resource Commission to add a voice for residents in the important decisions
they make. Once each month this West Ender publication brings news of our
neighborhood directly to your home. The West End Association is by and for
the residents of the West End historic district of Winston-Salem.
The success of the West End Association depends on the participation of a
wide range of its residents including you! If you are a current member,
Thank You! If you have not yet renewed your membership this year, please do.
If you have not yet joined, it is time to join. Working together we can do
our part to strengthen our neighborhood and continue its preservation for
the next generation. visit our web site to become a member of your
West End Association. >>Join Now!
